This article on the Food and Drug Administration website is released by Kathleen K. Quinn. She states that this new law is part of the government’s plan to reduce smoking in America. As in another she also states that smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the America. Quinn is leader in the FDA so she obviously supports this new law and believes that no rights should be given back to these lawbreaking tobacco companies. She says that the FDA’s ban on candy and fruit flavored cigarettes is shedding light on the importance of reducing the amount of children who start or become addicted to cigarettes. In her writing she quotes the statement of Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg. She states that Hamburg says that ninety percent of adult smokers started as teenagers. Quinn also states that Hamburg believes that these flavored cigarettes are the ignition to the fire for many children and young adults to become every day smokers. She believes that children are more likely to have their eye caught by an advertisement for flavored products than adults are. Quinn believes that marketing techniques of the tobacco companies on their products with sweet and fruit flavoring are misleading. She states that she believes that with these techniques make teens believe that these products are less harmful and not addicting. The answer to my research based on Quinn’s point of view is no. Her decision is based on the belief that the actual products these companies are selling are misleading rather than these companies’ actual advertising. The author believes that these flavorful cigarettes were produced by these companies specifically to attract the younger audience. It is not clearly stated, but it is implied that Quinn believes the tobacco companies should not have any rights because whom they have ultimately targeted.

This website is valuable for someone to read because it is the direct website of whom has gained power to regulate the tobacco companies. This source is helpful to someone answering my research question because it contains other links that display the harmful effects of flavorful cigarettes. The FDA website is an important source to use because it contains many previous studies on the ages that are more likely to smoke flavorful cigarettes. This website states that studies have shown that seventeen year olds are more likely to smoke flavorful cigarettes than a person of the age of twenty five. Seventeen is not of the legal age to smoke, so this proves these companies have broken the law once again. This source is helpful to someone who is interested in the FDA’s intensions with this new law. Overall, this source is the more factual than any of my other ones that I have selected because the information displayed is coming straight from the law creators themselves.
